Edna "Mama" Payne is a one of numerous recurring characters played by Martin Lawrence on the FOX TV series Martin.
Martin Payne's shrill, extremely frenetic, and easily excited mother, Edna, who is insanely overprotective of Martin, also dislikes Gina, her daughter-in-law, immensely.
Comically, Lawrence's mustache was never covered with stage make-up while in this role. Mama's mustache was occasionally the subject of a sharp retort by Gina when she and Martin argued. She has a brother named Junior (portrayed by the late John Witherspoon. Mama Payne does not appear in the fifth and final season, but her voice is heard in the episode "Scrooge".
